Drop the Bomb (Medals)

"Absolutely impossible, but well made"

date: June 19, 2009

Seriously, the difficulty of this needs toning down about 10 levels. While I'm at a disadvantage anyway through not being American, rendering probably 80% of the questions I'm facing pure guesswork (Seriously, there is sport and TV outside of the USA you know...), even the 'neutral' subjects are tough. I'd consider myself to have a good general knowledge, but every question is painfully obscure.

I've played 20 or so games and made the final once, it is just that tough!

At the very least scale it, so rounds for $100 have much easier questions, while the $1000 dollar rounds are more like the current difficulty. I lucked out getting the 8 question right in a row medal, but some of the others seem completely impossible as it is at the moment.

Other than that, it is a well made and entertaining game, and I've not come across any glitches like some other people have. The music does get a bit annoying though...

7/10

Author's Response:

That's a fair review, and to be honest, if I weren't American, then yes, I would have questions that centered outside my culture. We're planning a question expansion very soon, so if you would like to help and contribute questions, then PM me and we'll start a dialogue.

In Utero

"Great!"

submission: In Utero
date: May 2, 2009

I was on the verge of accusing this game of being too difficult, with probably 6 or 7 attempts ending at the boss. But as there is no more beyond that (thank goodness!) it is pretty much spot on! Takes a few goes, but you get there in the end!

Gameplay is smooth, enemies are initially overwhelming, but actually quite manageable, the pace it comes at you is fast and furious, but needs to be to make sure you don't blast through it in one go. Certainly the challenge keeps you coming back until you've won!

And medals as well, though the scew of points seems a little odd- perhaps 100 points for beating the boss with no lives lost and 25 for passing the first level without shooting (as that is easy with so many lives).

I guess you could accuse it of being too short, but with so many of the medal games taking an age to finish it was actually refreshing to have one that is a quick, fun blast and actually replayable without wanting to kill something...

All in all a great effort, a good little time waster, and a worthy tribute to mini fulp and parents.

May 2, 2009

Author's Response:

i'm surprised that people are willing to replay this so much. is it the frustration of not beating it that makes you go back? or the allure of more punishment? a need for closure?

there are a lot of mixed responses regarding the smoothness of this. sometimes i get "it's so laggy" and sometimes it just runs fine. i don't know if it's the user's browser or their computer, or if it's the game itself. i guess it's in this paragraph that you reveal why you kept coming back to try and beat the boss - the challenge. interesting.

there was a lot of difficulty balancing in-between coming up with medals and their point values and the release. the boss used to be a lot harder, but after complaints from our beta testers, we had to drop it down quite a few notches. we tried to keep it at least a little challenging, but it's hard to tell exactly how challenging it is after making it and testing it so much. i can run through the game and beat it without dying once, but i certainly don't represent the majority of people, especially on their first try. also, the first level used to last longer, and you used to get swarmed with more enemies. it's still fairly challenging, because the fish and spores are hard to dodge, and throwing in the shots from the black tampons and the terrain really complicates things. sometimes you just get lucky.

this game was initially supposed to be a mini-game, and though it grew and grew in complexity, we still kept it short. it was actually going to be longer, with multiple levels and multiple bosses.

thanks for your thoughtful review.

-Spectre-

"Nice game!"

submission: -Spectre-
date: June 4, 2007

Firstly, damn you for submitting this in that 8 hour period I was asleep! I didn't even realise it was here until you posted about it in the Mafia :P.

Great game, simple yet fun- that is a good combination.

Graphics- Nice and shiny, not a lot more that could be done with them given the style of the game, and my computer was already laggy enough at around 10,000 points without any more for it to worry about. Maybe could have done a bit more with the menus, but that doesn't really matter as far as the game goes.

Style- Simple style, and easy to pick up and play. The concept is fairly original, and the difficulty curve is just about right, though it does jump quite quickly from being easy to incredibly difficult. I still would have liked to see more colors, and random color changes rather than in sequence, but I know that would have fried my computer, so I'll shut up :)

No violence and Humor, doesn't need them, nor should there be any in a game like this (unless you include me beating my head against my desk when I got trapped in a corner by 5 blue balls)

Interactivity- I don't know what everyone else is moaning about, I like the mouse control, it adds to the difficulty that it moves around a bit. The keyboard control is a lot more difficult as you can't move diagonally, but still playable- in fact I found it easier to avoid balls with the keyboard, but harder to catch ones of the right color. Good to see you implemented the bouncing off the side walls, that really helped.

So overall a very solid 4/5, and congrats on the daily 4th, you deserved it!

Author's Response:

Too bad you weren't there, maybe next time I submit something XD
As far as the review goes, thanks alot it's very helpful. I'm glad you liked the game and thanks for the congratulations.

"Why did I agree to this?"

date: April 29, 2007

Because it was so damn funny, that's why :D. All of the parts were great, although I particularly liked Snerd's. Mine was of course 100% accurate, except for the part saying I worshiped one SlashFirestorm or something. I don't know where you got that from. (I hope I heard that right, the speakonia voices were becoming a blur).

Poor graphics, horrible sound, and one of the funniest movies ever submitted to the portal. Much the same as ever then :)

Monkey's are just as good as lovers as they are as flying cohorts to do my bidding.

4/5 (but given a 5 anyway, cos you coauthored me :D)

Author's Response:

Yes, you did hear right. A random blurb of "Slash Firestorm is God."

You're lucky the giant gorilla was too horny to notice. If he heard you yell the wrong name, he might have hurt you.

The bad way. :-(

"I never saw the show :("

date: April 25, 2007

Damn living in the UK- I'm not sure this show was ever shown there, and as such I have no clue what the hell you are on about for most of that flash. Sadly that really damaged the humor mark, but I gave it a passing grade over all as it isn't your fault I had a deprived childhood.

Most of the marks are the same as ever, so I can't be bothered to go through them again. Maybe do Slash Classics on things that everyone has seen or knows about in future :D

2/5

Author's Response:

Ah! Real Monsters was one of the greatest cartoons ever aired. It was about a bunch of monsters who scared the hell out of kids, then showed it to the Monster Academy through this weird mind-projector thing.

It fucking rocked.

Slash Ret...duuuuude?

"Good, but not enough substance"

date: April 25, 2007

This was a good flash for what was there- the picture was well drawn, the animation on the smoke was good, and there was an excellent choice of song. Plus for one frame it was pretty funny, Cheetos and all. The problem was that was it. It really needed a bit more to it, even just a couple of frames would have made all of the difference.

As it is not a bad tribute to 4/20 (a date that meant absolutely nothing to me- I guess we don't have it in the UK as the date would be 20/4), but not quite good enough to get a passing mark from me.

1/5

Author's Response:

Nobody is more shocked that this passed than me, lol. I submitted it fully expecting blamming, which I was okay with (no worries about portal bans anymore, ha)...

SlashClassic1: Self-Rape

"Bon Jovi is teh sex"

date: April 25, 2007

I saw him live last year and everything...

Anyway, the flash! A fantastic self parody there, and one of the funniest submissions I have seen in a long time. It was funny cos it was true (except for the giant erection- we know it was three inches really).

Graphics- not good, but then it wouldn't have been half as funny to see a well animated/drawn Slash rubbing against Drew Pickles, so it doesn't matter.

Style- typical Slash classic style, and reliant entirely on humor, which there was in abundance. I still hate the damn speakonia voices, but it wouldn't be the same without them.

Sound- annoying, but necessary for the style, so a 5.

Humor- 10 out of 10, one of the funniest submissions I have ever seen. To be able to make fun of yourself is great, and it is all the funnier for it.

So a solid 3/5, which isn't bad at all for a flash with so little animation skill.

Author's Response:

Questioning the size of my penis is a challenge.

Also, Bon Jovi.

I need to update this one...

Slash Returns: Supremacy

"Not as funny as some, but still great"

date: April 24, 2007

Yeah, another great flash, with a great plot- the return of Sevenstar was certainly a good twist.

Graphics- your usual style, and therefore great. Such simple lines, but the way it is kind of untidy almost brings it to life, especially the action shots. Not much animation is the only complaint, but it doesn't hurt it too much as the drawing style almost looks like it is moving.

Style- a style you have made your own, and therefore high marks for originality. Plus it is great anyway to see flash with so little animation skill, yet be so enjoyable to watch- you are one of a very few who can do that.

Sound- all of the music choices were excellent, and added to the epic feel. In all of the flash of yours that I have watched and reviewed so far you have near perfect choice of music.

Violence- plenty, but without animation you miss out on the splatter

Humor- not much, but the line where you asked the viewer to ignore the continuity error was hilarious :D

So 4/5 overall, and another great submission. Plus a great way to celebrate reaching EGSC- 71st seems a long time ago considering I just became the 90th.

Author's Response:

If I had more time, I'd have made this much longer, heh.

I may use the same let-the-reader-move-the-story -ahead technique again, because I keep forgetting that not everyone speedreads like I do...

BEHOLD 71!

Actually, I wish I was 72, because 71 is a weird number. I mean, it just...is. Whereas 72 is a good one.

GOOD NUMBERS (1-100):

3, 5, 10, 12, 15, 16, 18, 24, 25, 32, 36, 50, 64, 69, 72, 75, 85, 90, 100.

Slash Presents: Liz <3

"How are you still alive?!?!"

date: April 23, 2007

I'm glad Liz has a sense of humour- had I made something like this for many of my female friends I wouldn't be alive to see the next day!

Anyway, the usual rundown...

The graphics were good for you, although the random pictures got a bit stale towards the end of the flash (when they first popped up I thought it was hilarious). There was some solid animation in there (:O), and everything drawn in the usual style.

The style of the flash was much like your others, although it lacked much of the epic side that some of them had. Imagining your friend beating you to within an inch of your life made up for it though :D

Sound was perfect for this submission- really there is no other alternative that I can think of.

And it was as funny as ever, but I would expect nothing less. Shame we missed out on the gratuitous sex scene though- get those animation skills up to scratch damn it!!! :P

3/5 overall

Author's Response:

If I had made the gratuitous sex scene, I assure you, no matter how well-drawn it was, I would be sans-testicles right now. :-/

This was my first major project (the first one I actually put effort in), and I think it was pretty good, too, hehe.

If only she really had some weed...

Slash's Clock Day!

"Should have been in the clock day 06 collection :("

submission: Slash's Clock Day!
date: April 23, 2007

Once again I am late to the party, and watching this months after the event (in 2 and a half years on NG I'm yet to witness a clock day). It should have made the collection, but never mind.

The graphics are the best I have seen from you, and there was some genuinely nice animation in the middle there. It's a shame you couldn't animate the fight, but the fact you couldn't and admitted as much was funny enough to make up for it :D

These older submissions of yours have a style I really like. A combination of your great artwork, and some hilarious dialog and epic music to go with it. More submissions like this would be great :)

The music was good, although again I didn't recognise the tracks you used. It was a good choice for the submission anyway.

Plenty of violence, and crazy gun wielding grannies are always good for a laugh.

The humor was top notch, with a good parody of airports (something I have seen far too much of with all my travelling in the last year), and some fantastic writing. Also the 'Nooooooooooo' at the end was brilliant :D.

I confess I didn't watch to the end of the credits, so if there was more after that I'm sorry- I'm hungry and wanted to write this review before getting food!

4/5 overall, and the best flash I have seen from you. It deserves to be your highest mark, even though part of that is due to the mark inflation on clock day.

Author's Response:

This flash is still my most time-consuming work...took me a week (lol). It just BARELY was ready in time for Clock Day, too.

ZOMG YOU NEED TO BE THERE NEXT CLOCK DAY. It was fucking CRAZY, man. Over 1000 submissions...damn damn damn.

Despite the fact that nearly EVERYTHING passes on Clock Day, I still made this my bestest work, heh.

The only thing after the credits was me shouting at the listener to go the fuck away. XD

The music was "Rising Will To Fight" and "Ryuusei", both Naruto music.
